9 Surprising Foods that can Interfere with Your Sleep

Chocolate:

The caffeine present in chocolate is a proven sleep disrupter. Theobromine, another compound present in chocolate increases the heart rate and causes sleeplessness.

Cheese:

Through rich in protein and the amino acid tryptophan, which aids in relaxation and sleep, cheese also consists of high amounts of tyramine, which increases the heart rate which has a negative influence on sleep.

Curry:

Spicy foods such as curries or even a hot sauce and mustard contains high levels of capsaicin. This particular chemical elevates the body temperature by interfering with the body’s thermoregulation process, which in turn disrupts sleep.

Ice Cream:

The most loved late-night binge is the reason you are wide awake till dawn! Ice cream is high sugar and high-fat food that can often lead to disrupted sleep. One of the reasons for this is that eating it right before bed will pump a jolt of energy due to the sugar present in it which can result in a night of restless sleep

Grapefruit:

Highly acidic foods can worsen the symptoms of heartburn by resulting in sleep-disrupting acid reflux. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid them before going to bed.

 

Dried Fruits:

Consuming too much high fiber foods like dry fruits can cause gastric discomfort and result in cramps and gas during the night.

Alcohol:

It is a well-known fact that alcohol is a natural depressant and may help put you to bed faster, however, what it interrupts is the quality of sleep and causes unwanted disturbances and reduced REM sleep.

Peppermint:

It is best to avoid those post-dinner mints offered after a meal and head straight home. Peppermint is a heartburn trigger and so it is advised to stay away from it before bed.

Green Tea:

Shocking, but True! This fat-burning beverage is surely popular for its multiple health benefits, however, it’s best to have your last cup hours before you hit the bed. Caffeine is a significant component of green tea which acts as a stimulant. It also increases the heart rate, feelings of nervousness, and overall anxiety.

So make sure you don’t have these foods before you sleep. You can have 2 or 3 nuts OR 2 dates OR 2 Anjeer(dried figs) OR just have a glass of water.
